Here’s why maintaining a calm nervous system is beneficial

^

Hormonal Balance

Stress activates the body’s “fight or flight” response, leading to the release of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Elevated levels of these hormones can disrupt the delicate balance of the hypothalamus, which controls reproductive hormones like LH and FSH. This disruption can interfere with regular ovulation and menstrual cycles in women, and impact sperm production in men.

^

OVULATION

Stress-induced hormonal imbalances can lead to irregular cycles, where ovulation doesn’t occur. Ovulation is necessary for conception, and irregular cycles can make it more difficult to predict the fertile window for intercourse

FERTILISATION & IMPLANTATION:

A calm nervous system promotes optimal blood flow to reproductive organs, including the uterus. Adequate blood flow is essential for successful fertilisation and implantation of a fertilised embryo.

^

LIBIDO

Stress can negatively affect your libido and sexual function, making it more challenging for couples to engage in regular and enjoyable sexual activity during their fertile window

^

MIND-BODY CONNECTION

The mind-body connection is powerful. Emotional stress can trigger physical responses in the body, potentially impacting fertility. Conversely, relaxation techniques and mindfulness practices can positively influence reproductive health.

^

RELATIONSHIPS

A calm nervous system can help improve communication and emotional connection between partners during the challenging journey of trying to conceive.

^

PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING

The process of trying to conceive can be emotionally taxing. Chronic stress and anxiety can lead to feelings of frustration, disappointment, and even depression, which can further hinder the conception process.

^

CONCEPTION

Managing stress before conception sets the stage for a healthier pregnancy. A calm nervous system contributes to general well-being, fostering a healthier lifestyle and emotional state, which can positively impact fertility and overall health.

Shaking

All women on a fertility journey need this, especially those times when you feel anxious and stressed this can and will really help and it is only 30 seconds.

Shaking activates the parasympathetic nervous system which signals to the brain to calm, relax and let go when the body is overstimulated.

Shaking reduces anxiety, stress, tension and helps you when you are in the sympathetic fight/flight reaction to calm the mind and body.

The next time you feel triggered with any kind of big or small emotion, give shaking a go. If it’s not all wobbling you are not doing it right.

Healing your nervous system with simple, basic tools consistently, will bring your mind and body back to a calm state faster and will help your hormones recover and come back to balance.

I see many people in the clinic in high states of arousal, many with fertility challenges, so it’s important to learn how to self regulate to feel balanced and stable.

Humming

Research has shown that humming stimulates your vagus nerve through vibration of your throat which increases your vagal tone and is more than a self soothing sound. When you do this it regulates your emotions and affects you on a physical level

  • reducing stress
  • promotes calmness
  • enhances sleep from increased levels of
    melatonin.
  • Increases the lymphatic circulation, clearing
    toxins from the body
  • lowers heart rate and blood pressure
  • releases powerful neurochemicals such as oxytocin –the “love” hormone, creat
  • releases endorphins, the feel good hormone

When you are in high arousal states of stress, anxiety, overwhelm your body goes into fight/ flight or freeze where your body perceives a threat or that you are in danger. Many times this isn’t the case, however your body behaves accordingly.

Flight/Flight👉 panic, anxiety, racing thoughts, hypervigiliant, not feeling in control.

Freeze 👉emotional numbness, procrastination, emptiness.

When you are in this arousal state you will experience the above symptoms and more and if you stay elevated for long periods of time, I cannot even begin to tell you what that does to your mind, body and hormones.
